PhD position:
Fabrication of 2D carbon nanomembranes (CNM) by electron and EUV induced modification and cross-linking of surface bound molecular layers

The group of Physics of Supramolecular Systems and Surfaces at the Faculty of Physics of Bielefeld University offers a PhD position for the experimental investigation of chemical reactions occurring during the exposure of surface bound molecular monolayers to electron and EUV radiation.
Our research focusses on precursor molecules that form intermolecular links to their neighbors to build a mechanical stable 2D carbon nanomembrane (CNM). This project addresses experimentally trained PhD students who are interested in working on the control, analysis and preparation of surface bound molecular layers, the creation and analysis of two-dimensional molecular layer systems and the characterization and application of CNMs. The project offers opportunities for candidates interested in working at the interface between physics, chemistry and nanotechnology, guided by close collaborations within an international team of material scientists, chemists and physicists within academia, research institutes and industry.
As a part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network ELENA, this project encourages young researchers to investigate the chemistry and physics involved in two emerging techniques for creating nanostructures by utilizing electron beams, and lithography with light of very short wavelengths (extreme ultraviolet light). ELENA participants are 8 academic institutions, 2 research institutes and 4 companies. Fifteen young researchers will be working in the network. Two secondments at partner laboratories are part of the training.

PhD position:
Modelling and application of FEBIP based mask repair processes

The group of Physics of Supramolecular Systems and Surfaces at the Faculty of Physics of Bielefeld University (Germany) and Zeiss in Rossdorf offer a joined open PhD position in the field of Focussed Electron Beam Induced Processing (FEBIP).
FEBIP is a growing scientific field at the interface between physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology. In photomask repair technology FEBIP is used to either remove excess absorber material by etching or adding missing material by direct focussed deposition. The project offers an opportunity for a student who is interested in FEBIP science work in close collaboration with an industrial partner with direct application to high end semiconductor production.
As a part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network ELENA, this project encourages young researchers to investigate the chemistry and physics of focused electron beam induced deposition and extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) - two emerging techniques for creating nanostructures - within an international team of material scientists, chemists, and physicists within academia, research institutes and industry. The goal is to gain fundamental understanding of the chain of processes induced by secondary electrons in these processes and to better understand the resulting chemical reactions that lead to the pattern formation.
ELENA participants are 8 academic institutions, 2 research institutes and 4 companies. Fifteen young researchers will be working in the network. Two secondments at partner laboratories are part of the training.
